About AquaponicsDIYer

AquaponicsDIYer is a guide to growing fish and vegetables together at home, from a fish tank garden on the kitchen counter to a backyard system built from reused tanks and totes.

How It Started

AquaponicsDIYer was started in 2018 by Frank Wood, a professional aquaponics gardener who has farmed all his life and tried many kinds of farming and gardening along the way. He set up the site to teach people what he had learned from years of growing and from dozens of books on the subject, and because he sees aquaponics as one of the most practical ways to grow fresh food sustainably at home.

Frank's Own Systems

Frank prefers to build rather than buy, and to reuse what he already has. His own DIY system uses a metal watering trough as the fish tank, chosen because it fits well and is easy to find, and a large drum filled with mesh as the biofilter, where the bacteria colonize the big surface area of the mesh. He started that system at one fish for every 10 gallons of water to keep it balanced. He also tested the home aquaponics kits on the market for our kits guide.

AquaponicsDIYer Today

The site is now operated by AquaponicsDIYer and run by the AquaponicsDIYer team, who write and update the guides, building on what Frank started. We check stocking rates, water parameters and plant requirements against university extension services, research papers and the manufacturers' own specifications, and we keep the product picks current: products that are no longer sold come off the page.

Pages that describe Frank's own systems and kit tests carry his name. Everything else is signed by the AquaponicsDIYer team.
